Why smart devices fail to connect
Many smart home searches happen after purchase, when people are trying to resolve setup, connectivity, syncing, or device-response issues. If your new gadget will not connect, you are not alone, and the cause is often simple.
The classic issue: 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Most Wi-Fi routers transmit on two frequencies, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and almost all smart home devices can use only the 2.4 GHz one. If your phone is connected to the network on the 5 GHz band, it may not be able to see or communicate with the device. Before you plug anything in or download the app, make sure your phone is connected to the network the device will live on.
Other things to check
- Wi-Fi signal strength in the spot where the device lives.
- Whether the device, its app, and its firmware are up to date.
- Whether the device needs to be reset or set up again after a router change or a move.
Work through these in order and most connection problems resolve without a call to support.
